Where to store your crypto? Platform, third party, hot wallet or cold wallet

Published on 17/10/2026

There are four ways to store your crypto: leave it on the platform where you bought it, entrust it to a specialist third party, or keep it yourself in a hot wallet or a cold wallet. The first two delegate custody, the last two put it entirely in your hands.

This guide compares the four options to help you choose where to keep your crypto safe. It applies in every country of the European Union and is not investment advice.

In short:
  • On the platform: no keys to manage, the platform holds your crypto for you.
  • With a third party: a custodian or an asset manager holds, and sometimes manages, your crypto.
  • In a hot wallet: you hold your keys on a connected application, like a current account.
  • In a cold wallet: you hold your keys offline, like in a safe.

01Storing crypto: it all comes down to private keys

Despite its name, a crypto wallet does not contain your crypto. It stays recorded on the blockchain. The wallet holds what allows you to move it: your private keys.

Whoever holds the private key can send the associated crypto anywhere, with no way back. That is why choosing where to store your crypto comes down, above all, to choosing where your keys live.

When you create a wallet, you receive a recovery phrase (seed phrase): usually 12 or 24 words in a precise order. It lets you recreate your keys on any compatible device. Write it down offline, and never photograph or share it: anyone who knows it can access your crypto, and nobody can reset it for you if you lose it.

Hence the distinction between the four options: either a provider holds the keys for you (platform or third party), or you hold them yourself (hot or cold wallet). The first case is called delegated custody, the second self-custody.

02Option 1: leave your crypto on the platform

This is what most beginners do, often without realising it. After a purchase, your crypto stays in your account: the platform holds the keys and keeps them for you. You access it with your login details, like an online account.

What it means for you:

  • Nothing to manage: no recovery phrase to back up, no device to buy.
  • Selling or swapping is immediate, since your crypto is already there.
  • You depend on the platform to access your crypto and withdraw it.

Under MiCA, this service is called “safekeeping and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients”. Article 75 of the regulation requires a platform authorised for this service to keep your assets separate from its own and to maintain a record of each client's positions. In the event of insolvency, the assets held in custody are not part of its estate. Check that custody is covered by its authorisation.

Uncrypt Check shows a platform's authorisation status, the authority that granted it and the date it was obtained, based on the official register.

03Option 2: entrust your crypto to a third party

You can also entrust your crypto to a provider separate from the one where you buy it. There are two cases:

  • A specialist custodian: it holds your crypto on your behalf, without managing it. It is the same MiCA service as custody on a platform, offered by a firm whose main business it is.
  • An asset manager: it holds your crypto and also makes investment decisions for you, according to an agreed strategy. Under MiCA, this service is called “portfolio management of crypto-assets” (Article 81): the provider must check that the service suits you before starting, and send you regular statements.

As with a platform, you do not hold the keys: you rely on the third party, whose authorisation must cover the service provided.

04Option 3: the hot wallet, your current account

A hot wallet is a crypto wallet whose keys are stored on a device connected to the internet: a mobile app, a browser extension or software on a computer. Like a current account, it is used for everyday operations: receiving, sending, using decentralised applications.

What it means for you:

  • It is quick and free to install. A few minutes are enough to create a wallet.
  • You hold your keys: nobody can block your crypto, but nobody can recover it for you in case of a mistake.
  • The keys are exposed to the risks of the device: malware, fake websites, a stolen or compromised phone.

The rule that follows: in a hot wallet, keep what you would accept carrying in your pocket when you leave home, not your savings.

05Option 4: the cold wallet, your safe

A cold wallet keeps your private keys offline. The most common form is the hardware wallet: a small dedicated device, similar to a USB stick, which signs transactions without ever exposing the keys to the computer or phone it is plugged into. Like a safe, it is used to keep for the long term what you do not touch often.

What it means for you:

  • Your keys never touch the internet. An attacker who takes control of your computer cannot read them.
  • Every transfer is confirmed physically, on the device itself. Operations therefore take more steps.
  • The device has a price, and it must be bought from the manufacturer or an official reseller, never second-hand.

Losing or breaking the device does not mean losing your crypto: the recovery phrase lets you restore it on a new device. It is the phrase, not the device, that must be protected like the contents of a safe.

06Hot and cold wallets under the regulation

Personal wallets are not services regulated by MiCA: the regulation specifies that providers of non-custodial wallet software or devices fall outside its scope. The transfer from a platform to your wallet, however, is regulated: when you withdraw more than €1,000 of crypto to your own wallet, the platform must verify that the address belongs to you.

08Which option to store your crypto?

  • You are starting with small amounts and want to be able to sell easily: the platform avoids any key management, provided it is authorised for custody.
  • You want to manage neither your keys nor your investments: a third party, custodian or asset manager, takes over.
  • You make frequent transactions or use decentralised applications: a hot wallet, with limited amounts.
  • You hold your crypto for the long term and want to be its sole keeper: a cold wallet.

These options are not mutually exclusive. Many holders combine, for example, a platform to buy, a hot wallet for everyday use and a cold wallet for savings.

09Frequently asked questions

Where can you store crypto safely?

There are four options: on the platform, with a specialist third party, in a hot wallet or in a cold wallet. The first two rely on a provider, which must be MiCA-authorised for the service provided. The last two leave you as the sole holder of your keys.

Is it risky to leave crypto on a platform?

You depend on the platform to access and withdraw it. In return, a platform authorised under MiCA for custody must keep your assets separate from its own: in the event of bankruptcy, they are not part of its estate.

What is the difference between a hot wallet and a cold wallet?

A hot wallet keeps your private keys on a device connected to the internet, such as a phone. A cold wallet keeps them offline, generally on a dedicated device. The first is used for everyday operations, the second for long-term storage.

What is a recovery phrase (seed phrase)?

It is a sequence of 12 or 24 words that lets you recreate your wallet's keys on another device. Anyone who knows it can access your crypto: it is written down offline and never shared.

If I lose my cold wallet, do I lose my crypto?

No, as long as you have your recovery phrase. Your crypto stays on the blockchain: the phrase lets you restore your keys on a new device. Without it, however, access is lost.

Do you need a wallet to buy crypto?

No. You can buy and keep your crypto on a platform without creating a personal wallet. A hot or cold wallet becomes useful if you want to hold your keys yourself.

10Before choosing where to keep it, choose where to buy

Whether you keep your crypto on the platform, with a third party or in your own wallet, everything starts with where you buy it. The Uncrypt Comparator shows, for each platform, its type of provider, its MiCA authorisation status, the authority that granted it and a link to the official register.
